Wine of the month (December): Nik Weis St. Urbans-Hof Laurentiuslay QbA GG 2012

In the November Edition of the WineInspector Magazine, we focussed predominantly on German wines. There were lots of very good wines, but one standed out because of its precision, structure and depth.

Nik Weis St. Urbans-Hof Laurentiuslay QbA GG 2012:

The 2012 Laurentiuslay GG (100% Riesling) is straw yellow in colour. In the nose a fine bouquet with intense, deep and concentrated flavours of apple, yeast, stone, grapefruit and a touch of sulphur. On the palate it shows, why it is the best wine of the ones we tested: Intense and precise aromas of apple, yeast, lemon, grapefruit, flowers and stone go hand in hand. Medium bodied, vibrant acidity and a long aftertaste. Good buy! Drink: 2013-2023.

Der 2012er Lautentiuslay GG (100% Riesling) besitzt eine strohgelbe Farbe. In der Nase ein feines Bouquet mit intensiven, tiefen und konzentrierten Düften nach Apfel, Hefe, Stein, Grapefruit und einem Hauch von Schwefel. Im Mund zeigt er, warum er der beste Wein derer ist, die wir testen durften: Intensive und präzise Aromen von Apfel, Hefe, Zitrone, Grapefruit, Blumen und Stein gehen Hand in Hand. Mittlerer Körper, lebhafte Säure und ein langer Abgang.

Paint My Wine - The expression of terroir?

La Paroisse Grand Vin de Bordeaux AOC 2009 - Deep Tasting

First of all: What is a "deep tasting"? Under this category we give you the tasting notes of the first days after the bottle has been opened. 

Today we take a look at "La Paroisse Grand Vin de Bordeaux AOC 2009", a very cheap Bordeaux for 7,60€ (~ $10) only.

1st day:

On the first day the La Paroisse is a bit reticent. Merlot and Petit Verdot dominate nose and mouth. The wine appears very fresh and fine-aromatic. Very unbalanced and slightly green, superficial tannins. Needs time to breathe. But the structure seems to be hopeful. 

Rating: 84 points.

Am ersten Tag ist der La Paroisse noch etwas verschlossen. Merlot und Petit Verdot dominieren Nase und Mund. Der Wein zeigt sich äußerst frisch und feinaromatisch. Sehr unbalanciert sowie leicht grüne, vordergründige Tannine. Braucht Zeit zum Atmen, aber die Struktur stimmt hoffnungsvoll.

2nd day:

For many wines, which spended 1-2 years in barrels, the second day is the low point. But La Paroisse is different here:

This blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot) is deep dark red in colour. In the nose it exhibits a soft and fresh bouquet with relatively precise flavours of cherry, plum, currant, jalapeno and fine spices. On the palate it offers good density and freshness with intense and polished aromas of cherry, raspberry, mirabelle, jalapeno and a touch of plum, sustained by fresh acidity and well-integrated tannins. Medium to full bodied, well-balanced and a good finish. Best buy! Drink: 2016-2023.

Rating: 87 points.

Für viele Weine, die 1-2 Jahre im Fass reiften, ist der zweite Tag der qualitative Tiefpunkt. Beim La Paroisse ist das allerdings anders:

Diese Cuvée (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot und Petit Verdot) besitzt eine tief dunkelrote Farbe. In der Nase ein weiches und frisches Bouquet mit recht präzisen Düften nach Kirsche, Pflaume, Johannisbeere, Jalapeno und feiner Würze. Im Mund zeigt er gute Dichte und Frische mit intensiven und wie geschliffenen Aromen nach Kirsche, Himbeere, Mirabelle, Jalapeno und etwas Pflaume, gestützt von frischer Säure und gut integrierten Tanninen. Mittlerer bis voller Körper, gute Balance und ein gutes Finale.

3rd day:

After the great second day, it loses balance again. The Cabernet is dominating nose and mouth. The La Paroisse loses concentration, precision, tannins and freshness. Its time to empty the bottle.

Rating: 85 points.

Nach dem tollen zweiten Tag verliert er wieder an Balance. Der Cabernet dominiert Nase und Mund. Der La Paroisse büßt zunehmend Konzentration, Präision, Tannine und auch Frische ein. Es ist Zeit, die Flasche zu leeren.

4th day:

Last chance of any enjoyment! The wine is wide open and not very concentrated anymore. Jalapeno is so much dominating, that it seems to be one-dimensionally. Nevertheless, there are notes of cherry and raspberry. The balance is gone.

Die letzte Chance auf ein wenig Genuss! Der Wein ist sperrangelweit offen und nicht mehr allzu konzentriert. Jalapeno dominiert so stark, dass es schon eindimensional erscheint. Nichtsdestotrotz gibt es noch Anklänge von Kirsche und Himbeere. Die Balance ist endgültig dahin.

Conclusion:

La Paroisse is a very nice wine. For 7,60€ (~ $10) it offers a good quality, but is not made for the long-term. What's more, older vintages (2006 or 2007) could be interesting, because the 2009 still needs 2-3 years for full ripeness.

Der La Paroisse ist ein schöner Wein. Für 7,60€ bietet er eine gute Qualität, ist aber nicht auf Langzeitgenuss ausgelegt. Zunächst könnten ältere Jahrgänge (2006 oder 2007) interessanter sein, da der 2009er noch 2-3 Jahre bis zur völligen Reife benötigt.

Cims de Porrera Solanes DOC 2007

Because of the rising number of (high) quality wines, Priorato is a region with growing attention. For people, who would like to take a look at it, we recommend this beauty:

This blend (50% Carinena, 20% Granacha, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5 Syrah) is dark violet in the glass, almost black. In the nose polished flavours of (sour) cherry, plum and liquorice. On the palate good polish and density with cherry, plum and liquorice, sustained by fresh acidity. Very "dirty-styled" on the following days. Medium to full bodied, soft tannins and a good aftertaste. Best buy! Drink: 2013-2020.

Rating: 91 points.

Diese Cuvée (50% Carinena, 20% Granacha, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot und 5% Syrah) besitzt eine dunkelviolette, fast schwarze Farbe. In der Nase wie geschliffene Aromen von (Sauer-)Kirsche, Pflaume und Lakritze. Im Mund guter Schliff und gute Dichte mit Kirsche, Pflaume und Lakritze, gestützt von frischer Säure. Sehr "schmutzig" an den Folgetagen. Mittlerer bis voller Körper, sanfte Tannine und ein guter Abgang.

A hidden gem: Ronchi di Manzano Pignolo DOC 2007

Pignolo is a rare and recently rescued vine with a lot of  potential. It has disappeared in the early twentieth century after Friuli was hit by phylloxera. In the 1970s it was rescued from a vineyard in the abbey of Rosazzo, where some old Pignolo vines had miraculously survived. In 2000 there were just 20 ha (49 acres) in Italy, but the total has increased. After this Pignolo matured for 18 months in French oak barriques it appears ruby in colour. In the nose intense, polished and spicy flavours of cherry, lemon grass, vanilla, black cherry, plum and tobacco. On the palate it reveals good polish, density and complexity with cherry, plum and lemon grass, intermixed with caramel, coffee, vanilla and tobacco; slight bitternis in the background. Medium to full bodied, good acidity, astringent tannins and a long aftertaste. An elegant wine. Good buy! Drink: 2013-2021.

Pignolo ist eine seltene und erst kürzlich gerettete Rebsorte mit viel Potenzial. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts, als die Reblauskatastrophe auch Fruili getroffen hatte, verschwand die Rebsorte völlig. In den 1970er Jahren konnte die Rebsorte allerdings auf einen Weinberg der Abtei von Rosazzo noch gerettet werden, da auf wundersame Weise ein paar alte Pignolo Rebstöcke überlebt hatten. Im Jahre 2000 waren lediglich 20 Hektar in ganz Italien zu verzeichnen. Diese Zahl ist in der Zwischenzeit allerdings etwas angestiegen. Nachdem dieser Pignolo 18 Monate in Barriques aus französischer Eiche reifte, präsentiert er sich in rubinroter Farbe. In der Nase intensive, wie geschliffene und würzige Düfte nach Kirsche, Zitronengras, Vanille, Schwarzkirsche, Pflaume und Tabak. Im Mund zeigt er guten Schliff, Dichte und Komplexität mit Kirsche, Pflaume und Zitronengras sowie Karamell, Vanille, Kaffee und Tabak; leichte Bitterkeit im Hintergrund. Mittlerer bis voller Körper, gute Säure, adstringente Tannine und ein langer Abgang. Ein eleganter Wein.

Wine of the month (September): Niepoort Vintage DOC 2011 [Cask Sample]

This sleeper (Sousao, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Cao, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa and Touriga Nacional from grapes older than 80 years) matured for 2 years in both toneis (30.000L barrels) and pipas (550L barrels) and appears dark violet in colour. In the nose intense, concentrated and deep flavours of plum, violets and pepper intermixed with liquorice, wild berries and blueberry. On the palate it shows great expression, polish and finesse with plum, blueberry, pepper and violets, mineral notes in the background. The sweetness is perfect integrated, leading to a great balanced, completed rounded wine. Medium to full bodied, soft tannins and a long finish. A monument. Rare buy! Drink: 2016-2045.

Dieser Schläfer (Sousao, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Cao, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa und Touriga Nacional von über 80 Jahre alten Reben) reifte zwei Jahre lang sowohl in Toneis (30.000L Holzfässer) als auch in Pipas (550L Holzfässer) und erscheint in dunklem Violet im Glas. In der Nase intensive, konzentrierte und tiefe Aromen von Pflaume, Veilchen und Pfeffer sowie Lakritze, Waldbeeren und Blaubeere. Im Mund zeigt er viel Ausdruckskraft, Schliff und Finesse mit Pflaume, Blaubeere, Pfeffer und Veilchen, mineralische Noten im Hintergrund. Die Süße ist perfekt integriert, womit der Wein sehr gut ausbalanciert und wie aus einem Guss wirkt. Mittlerer bis voller Körper, weiche Tannine und ein langes Finale. Ein Monument.

10 years of Château d'Aussières

Corbières is one of Languedoc’s most famous and productive wine regions. Its wine growing tradition dates back to Roman times. At that time the great properties of the “Roman Province of Narbonne” were registered in the land registry and became the main wine suppliers to Rome. In the years 92, the Domitius Emperor mandated an edict to uproot the vineyards massively to protect the Italian winemaking. In the Middle Ages, the viticulture of Corbières (particularly Aussières) experienced a renaissance. The Church saved the vineyard for nearly 800 years, having several owners during this period: In 1065, it belonged to the Mont Laures Abbey, which was bought by the Fontfroid Abbey in 1211. During this period Aussières was in the role of a Cistercian “granary”, a farm supplying the Abbey. After the holding of the Church were confiscated in 1790, Aussières was bought at an auction by Count Daru (later Minister and Administrator of the Private Estates of Napoleon Bonaparte) and re-established the wine-making with the planting of 80 hectares of vines. Because other regions in Europe suffered from phylloxera, the vineyard of Aussières was enlarged to meet the needs of the urban populations of Northern Europe and to compensate the drop in production from other vineyards in France. The phylloxera reached the Languedoc around 1880,

but the epidemic was quickly controlled, letting the vineyard continuing to grow and giving him an advantage compared to other regions. In the 1920s and 1930s, the vineyard of Château d’Aussières covered 270 ha. In the 1950s the tide has turned. The cultivation area declined and wine-growers left the region. Today the region is gradually moving toward the production of high quality wines. In 1999 Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) bought the 550 hectare estate and started a vast rehabilitation programme. Both 167 hectares of vines have been replanted and the estate buildings have been restored. Furthermore a new winery has been installed. 

The climate is a huge challenge with hot summers and few water. In spring and autumn the for the region typical Tramontane makes its way through the landscape and the vineyards. The winters are cold and dry and the soils are poor. The fact, that some owners of Bordeaux estates invested in the region, shows, that there must be plenty of potential. Even Baron Eric de Rothschild (Lafite)

recognized the “exceptional geographical location, [the] unique wine-growing site and history” of Château d’Aussières as well as its “wild, natural site of great force and beauty”. The team of Domaine d’Aussières conducted a deep analysis of the soils to be able to use the terroir as good as possible, by giving every grape the ideal conditions. In doing so the team even paid attention to specific demands like Mourvèdre’s sensitivity to stronger winds, said Eric Kohler, technical director of Domaine d’Aussières. A vertical tasting to the 10-years anniversary of Château d’Aussières was held to show the outcome of these huge efforts:

Château d’Aussières AOC 2003:

The 2003 Château d’Aussières (80% Syrah, 20% Grenache) was in a surprisingly good condition. No brown colour in the glass. The nose is still fresh. After 40% of the wine matured in barrels, the aromas are not fruit driven, but highly barrel-influenced. Flavours of mocha and caramel dominate fine cherry and plum aromas. Even on the palate it does not seem to be too old. Fruitier than the nose with cherry, plum and caramel. Full bodied, very soft and a long aftertaste. Should be drunken now.

Château d’Aussières AOC 2005:

40% of the 2005 Château d’Aussières (70% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre) matured in barrels (like the 2003 vintage) and reached its peak. Ruby in colour. In the nose a bit more passive than the 2003 vintage. The bouquet is dirty-styled with flavours of truffles, cigarres and textiles. On the palate soft structured and also dirty-styled with aromas of plum, mocha and caramel in between. Full bodied, very expressive on the palate and a long aftertaste. Not as barrel-influenced as the 2003 Château d’Aussières. Will be at its best for the next years.

Château d’Aussières AOC 2008:

The 2008 Château d’Aussières (58% Syrah, 10% Grenache, 32% Mourvèdre) appears ruby in the glass. In nose and mouth harmonious and complex with plum, lemon grass, iron and caramel, sustained by lush and soft tannins. At a glance the higher amount of Mourvèdre is noticeable. Full bodied, good density and a long aftertaste. Now an enjoyment, but even better in a few years. Good buy!

Château d’Aussières AOC 2010:

Besides the 2008 vintage, the 2010 Château d’Aussières (65% Syrah, 18% Mourvèdre, 7% Grenache, 10% Carignan) is the vertical’s second highlight. After 40% of the wine matured in barrels, the bouquet is surprisingly open already and displays intense notes of raspberry, lemon grass and caramel. In the mouth it appears super soft and well-balanced with perfect integrated, clutching tannins. Aromas of plum, raspberry and iron beguile the palate. Compared to the 2008 vintage more red fruits. Full bodied, good density and a long finish. Will be drinkable for more than a decade. Best buy!

Château d’Aussières AOC 2011:

Like the 2005 Château d’Aussières, the 2011 vintage (66% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 14% Grenache and 10% Carignan) is dirtier in the nose than the other representatives. Slightly broad flavours of lemon grass, plum and iron, intermixed with vegetable notes. On the palate not as dense and tense as the stronger vintages 2005, 2008 and 2010. Notes of plum, raspberry and iron. Medium to full bodied, very soft, good balance and a long aftertaste. Compared to the other vintages more dark fruits. Needs a few years to open completely.

At the end all the wines show the same style. It is the aspiration of Eric Kohler and Aymeric Izards to produce wines, which are ready to drink and as balanced as possible, right after they have been released. They accomplished their goal not only in good, but also in weaker vintages by exploiting the terroir at a maximum. You should keep an eye on Domaine d’Aussières, because it is one of the region’s best wineries already. With the ageing of the vines, the quality of Domaine d’Aussières’ wines can even reach higher levels.

Corbières ist eine der bekanntesten und produktivsten Regionen des Languedoc-Roussillon und besitzt eine Weinbautradition, die bis auf die Römerzeit zurückzuführen ist. Die großen Güter der Provinz Narbonensis wurden damals in die römische Weinbergrolle eingetragen und gehörten damit zu den wichtigsten Lieferanten Roms. Im Jahr 92 ordnete Kaiser Domitius jedoch ein Edikt an, das für die Rodung der Weinberge sorgte, um den italienischen Weinbau zu schützen. Erst im Mittelalter durchlebte der Weinbau eine Renaissance in Corbières (speziell: Aussières). Die Kirche setzte sich für die Bewahrung des Weinberges ein und machte Aussières für beinahe 800 Jahre zum Klostergut, wobei es mehrmals den Besitzer wechselte: 1065 gelangte es in den Besitz des Klosters Mont Laures. Dieses wurde wiederrum 1211 dem Kloster Fontfroide zugeschlagen. In dieser Zeit diente Aussières dem Kloster nur als Betrieb zur Versorgung des Klosters. Nachdem 1790 die Kirchengüter beschlagnahmt wurden, ersteigerte Graf Daru (später Minister und Verwalter der Privatgüter Napoléon Bonapartes) das Gut und führte auf einer Fläche von 80 Hektar den

Weinbau wieder ein. Sorgte die Reblauskatastrophe zunächst für Ausfälle in anderen Regionen und für eine Ausdehnung der Weinberge, so erreichte sie 1880 auch das Languedoc. Doch die Plage wurde schnell überwunden, sodass der Weinberg prosperierte. In den 20ern und 30ern des 20.Jahrhunderts wurden in Aussières 270 Hektar bewirtschaftet. Das Blatt wendete sich in den 50er Jahren, als die Rebflächen schrumpften und Winzer abwanderten. Heutzutage bemüht man sich zunehmend, Qualitätsweine herzustellen. 1999 kaufte die Domaine Baron de Rothschild (Lafite) das 550 Hektar große Gut auf und sanierte es grundlegend. Neben umfassenden Neuanpflanzungen auf einer Fläche von 167 Hektar restaurierte man auch mehrere Gebäude und richtete zudem einen neuen Weinkeller ein.

Das Klima stellt eine große Herausforderung dar. Die Sommer sind sehr heiß, Wasser Mangelware. Im Frühling und im Herbst bläst der für die Region berühmte Tramontane durch die Landschaft. Die Winter sind meist kalt und trocken. Auch die Böden machen es den ansässigen Winzern nicht gerade leichter. Sie sind recht karg.

Dennoch schlummert in der Region viel Potenzial, das in den letzten Jahren einige bordelaiser Châteaubesitzer entdeckt und in der Folge hinein investiert haben. So auch Baron Eric Lafite Rothschild, der dies mit der „ungewöhnlichen geographischen Lage, der hervorragenden Weinberge und seiner [Corbières, Anm. d. Autors] bewegten Geschichte“, die den Ort große Kraft und Schönheit ausstrahlen lassen, begründet. Um das Terroir bestmöglich zu nutzen, führte das Team der Domaine d‘Aussières eine umfassende Analyse der Böden durch, um in der Lage zu sein, jeder Rebsorte ihren bestmöglichen Standort zur Verfügung stellen zu können. Dabei beachtete man auch Faktoren wie beispielsweise die Windempfindlichkeit der Mourvèdre Reben, so Eric Kohler, der Technische Direktor der Domaine d‘Aussières. Ob sich diese Bemühungen gelohnt haben, zeigte eine Vertikalverkostung zum 10-jährigen Jubiläum des ersten Jahrganges des Château d’Aussières:

Château d’Aussières AOC 2003:

Der 2003er Château D’Aussières (80% Syrah, 20% Grenache) zeigte sich überraschend gut. Im Glas zeigte er keinerlei Brauntöne. Die Nase ist immer noch recht frisch, allerdings weniger frucht-, sondern stärker fassbetont, nachdem 40% des Weins in Fässern reifte. Düfte nach Mokka und Karamell dominieren die zarten Kirsch- und Pflaumenaromen. Auch im Mund hält sich die Alterung in Grenzen. Fruchtiger als in der Nase mit Kirsche, Pflaume und Karamell. Voller Körper, sehr weich und rund sowie ein langer Abgang. Sollte jetzt allerdings getrunken werden.

Château d’Aussières AOC 2005:

Die 2005er Château D’Aussières (70% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre) reifte wie schon der 2003er Jahrgang zu 40% in Fässern und dürfte sich gerade auf dem Höhepunkt befinden. Rubinrote Farbe. Ein etwas passiveres Bouquet. Etwas schmutziger in der Nase. Düfte nach Trüffel, Zigarre und Textilien. Im Mund weich strukturiert und ebenfalls schmutzig mit Aromen von Pflaume, Mokka und Karamell innerhalb des schmutzigen Gesamtbildes. Voller Körper, sehr expressiv und ein langer Abgang. Etwas weniger fassbetont als der 2003er Jahrgang. Der wird noch mehrere Jahre Spaß machen.

Château d’Aussières AOC 2008:

Der 2008er Château D’Aussières (58% Syrah, 10% Grenache, 32% Mourvèdre) zeigt sich rubinrot im Glas. In Nase und Mund ausbalanciert und komplex mit Pflaume, Zitronengras, Eisen und Karamell, gestützt von einem satten, aber weichen Tanningerüst. Man merkt sofort den erhöhten Mourvèdreanteil. Voller Körper, gute Dichte und ein langer Abgang. Jetzt schon ein Genuss, aber noch nicht mal auf seinem Höhepunkt.

Château d’Aussières AOC 2010:

Der 2010er Château D’Aussières (65% Syrah, 18% Mourvèdre, 7% Grenache, 10% Carignan) ist das zweite Highlight der Vertikale. Nachdem 40% des Weins in Fässern reiften, zeigt sich das Bouquet jetzt schon überraschend offen und intensiv mit Noten nach Himbeere, Zitronengras und Karamell. Im Mund ist er unglaublich weich und ausbalanciert mit perfekt integrierten, packenden Tanninen. Aromen von Pflaume, Himbeere und Eisen betören den Gaumen. Etwas rotfruchtiger als der 2008er. Voller Körper, gute Dichte und ein langes Finale. Wird mehr als ein Jahrzehnt lagerfähig sein.

Château d’Aussières AOC 2011:

Der 2011er Jahrgang (66% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 14% Grenache und 10% Carignan) präsentiert sich wieder etwas schmutziger in der Nase. Etwas breite Aromen von Zitronengras, Pflaume und Eisen sowie vegetabile Noten. Im Mund nicht ganz so dicht und spannungsreich wie die stärken Jahrgänge 2005, 2008 und 2010, Noten von Pflaume, Himbeere und Eisen. Mittlerer bis voller Körper, sehr weich, gute Balance und ein langer Abgang. Dunkelfruchtiger als die anderen Jahrgänge. Braucht noch etwas Zeit.

Insgesamt zeigten alle Weine einen klaren Stil. Das Ziel Eric Kohlers und Aymeric Izards besteht darin, Weine herzustellen, die nach der Abfüllung sofort zugänglich und möglichst ausbalanciert sind. Dies gelang ihnen allerdings nicht nur in guten, sondern auch in schwierigen Jahrgängen, in denen sie das ihnen zur Verfügung stehende Terroir bestmöglich nutzten. Die Entwicklung der Domaine d’Aussières sollte man im Auge behalten, da diese bereits jetzt zu den besten Weingütern der Region zählt und mit zunehmendem Alter der Reben sogar noch bessere Ergebnisse erzielen kann.

Amador Silva Estimado Superior Old Tawny Port 1938 - Still drinkable?

Sometimes there are some very old wines available at ebay. But its risky to buy them! Often you don't know, how the wine has been stored. One year ago I pushed my luck and bought the 1938 Amador Silva Estimado Superior Old Tawny Port for €50/$67 (in shops you normally find it for €250/$330).

I am favoured by fortune! The 1938 Estimado Superior Old Tawny Port is still amber in colour. In the nose intense flavours of nuts, caramel and slight wood. On the palate very expressive with caramel, vanilla and nuts. Full bodied, good balance and a long finish. Very few signs of ageing. Good buy! Drink: 2013-2033.

Rating: 93 points.

Hint: After you opened the bottle, the wine is not as long as younger port wines drinkable! 

Manchmal sind ein paar sehr alte Weine bei ebay erhältlich. Allerdings ist es riskant, diese zu kaufen. Oftmals ist die Lagerung unklar. Vor einem Jahr forderte ich mein Glück heraus und kaufte eine Flasche des 1938er Amador Silva Estimado Superior Old Tawny Port für 50 Euro (Onlinehändler listen den Wein normalerweise für 250 Euro).

Ich hatte Glück! Der 1938er Estimado Superior Old Tawny Port ist immer noch bernsteinfarben. In der Nase intensive Düfte von Nüssen, Karamell und etwas Holz. Im Mund sehr expressiv mit Karamell, Vanille und Nüssen. Voller Körper, gute Balance und ein langes Finale. Nur ganz leichte Alterstöne.

Aber Achtung: Nachdem die Flasche geöffnet wurde, ist sie nicht so lange trinkbar wie jüngere Portweine!

The wine for everyone?

Whenever I have guests I let them try one or another wine. Several tries lead me to the conclusion, that people, who don't drink wine very often, prefer sweeter wines or to phrase it:

The more interest in (and consumption of) wine, the more interest in dryness - the less interest in (and consumption of) wine, the more interest in sweetness.

As a result I know, if someone likes a specific wine or not before I let him or her taste it. But sometimes I try to offer something different, simply to see the reactions. This week two old friends visited me. Two guys, who don't drink (high quality) wines normally. This time I served Barbeito's "10 Anos Malvasia Reserva". To my surprise they loved it. 

Indeed it is a sweet wine (total sugar: 100g/dm³), but the mouth feel is not as sweet as my friends usually like it and not so sweet that I don't like it: not too dry for them; not too sweet for me. The sweetness hits the intersection point between all of us, maybe making it a wine for everyone? 

Barbeito 10 Anos Malvasia Reserva Velha

This Malvasia has been made by the Canteiro method and matured 10 years in old 620-litre French oak casks. Old golden in colour. In the nose intense flavours of vegetables, almond, caramel and fir honey. On the palate good density, depth, intensity and finesse with caramel, almond, walnut and a kind of vanilla. Full bodied, well-balanced and a good finish. Best buy! Drink: 2013-2043.

Dieser Malvasia wurde nach der Canteiro Methode hergestellt und reifte 10 Jahre in 620 Liter Fässern aus französischer Eiche. Altgoldene Farbe. In der Nase intensive Düfte nach Pflanzen, Mandel, Karamell und Tannenhonig. Im Mund gute Dichte, Tiefe, Intensität und Finesse mit Karamell, Mandel, Walnuss und einer Art Vanille. Voller Körper, gute Balance und ein gutes Finale.

Luddite Shiraz 2007:

This Shiraz is ruby in colour. In the nose a very complex and slightly sweet bouquet with wet soil, moss and herbs intermixed with plum and dried fig. After a certain time banana, caramel and liquorice. On the palate it exhibits great depth, finesse and multifacetedness with polished aromas of caramel, cherry and plum, sustained by sweet, present, fine-grained and mouth watering tannins. Medium to full bodied, perfect balance and a long aftertaste. Good buy! Drink: 2015-2021.

Luddite Shiraz 2007:

Dieser Shiraz erscheint rubinrot im Glas. In der Nase ein sehr komplexes und leicht süßes Bouquet mit nasser Erde, Moos und Kräutern sowie Pflaume und Feige. Nach einer gewissen Zeit Banane, Karamell und Lakritze. Im Mund zeigt er großartige Tiefe, Finesse und Vielschichtigkeit mit geschliffenen Aromen von Karamell, Kirsche und Pflaume, gestützt von süßen, präsenten, feinkörnigen und den Mund wässrig machenden Tanninen. Mittlerer bis voller Körper, perfekte Balance und ein langes Finale.
